Property spotlight: Waldhaus Flims Wellness Resort

Updated: Mar 7, 2022

Waldhaus Flims is a luxury resort situated in Flims, a cute alpine village located just a twenty minute drive from Chur, or just over an hour from Saint Gallen. The resort sits atop of the village and has beautiful panoramic views over Flims and the surrounding landscape. On a snowy day, it looks a little something like this:

How dreamy!

Those of you who know me well though know that I'm not a skier. What drew me to this property was its spa. Ever since I came across a picture of their spa, I knew I had to add it to my list.

This view, to be clear:

The property has a luxurious winding drive that becomes a winter wonderland in the snow. Drive through and you’ll reach the main building, the Grand, which houses the front desk, all hotel rooms, and two lovely restaurants - Siam, a Thai restaurant recently opened, and Fairöuz, which serves Lebanese cuisine.

We checked into our Mountain View suite, which had a little seating area separated from the bed by a revolving television stand that could either be pointed towards the sofa or towards the bed. The bathroom was a double “Jack and Jill” as they say, with the first bit encompassing or a large mirror and double sinks, and the second with a shower space, a tub, and the toilet. The balcony itself was large, with two easy loungers, and a stunning view of the surrounding snow capped mountains.

Take a quick room tour below:

They even surprised us with a little welcome champagne, and included a little bed and toy for Coco!

The Pavilion, next door to the Grand, is home to the Waldhaus spa, as well as two more restaurants - the Brasserie, which serves Swiss and international food, and ÉPOCA, their award winning fine dining establishment.

There are four buildings in total, and they are all connected underground, so you can easily get from one building to another.

We chose the Brasserie for our evening meal as we were in Switzerland and in the mood for Swiss cheese. The restaurant is a large and grand space, with tables strategically positioned in a curve by the ceiling to floor glass windows that (during daylight) give stunning panoramic views of the mountains. There was also a live piano bar, which made for a lovely romantic ambience.

The menu has several Swiss favorites, including two types of fondue and a lovely raclette option that came with four types of Swiss cheeses - smoked, truffle, garlic and bell pepper - just what we were looking for!

While we didn’t dine in any of the other restaurants, we did pass by Siam and it was absolutely packed, so I don’t think you could go wrong eating there! It was also the location of the morning breakfast, and it’s a lovely brightly lit room with tables again strategically placed by the large windows. There is also space in the front for those with pets, so that you can eat in a quieter space, which we absolutely loved, as we were the only ones there and it felt so private.

The breakfast spread is one of the better ones I’ve seen, and tasted! There was hot food that could be ordered from a menu, ranging from eggs any way to pancakes, and a buffet spread with more hot food, cold cuts and cheeses, fruit, bakery area, fresh healthy smoothies, and even bubbles if you’re in the mood for some morning fizz!

Definitely go for the omelette with all the works - you will not be disappointed.

Finally - THE SPA.

The indoor pool can be seen from outside, within ceiling-to-floor glass windows. The outdoor pool is accessed within the indoor pool area, and is heated at an appropriate 34 degrees. These were my favorite and honestly the dreamiest parts of the spa!

The rest of the spa contains different saunas, multiple wellness and treatment rooms, as well as private resting rooms if you’d like to take a break from the saunas. There’s plenty of water, drinks and snacks available to hydrate.

There’s also an earth pool that I imagine is super refreshing in the summer, but in February it was literally an ice pond. But of course, Michael, repping Newcastle men everywhere, had to give it a go!

If you’re looking for a scenic winter getaway set in idyllic grounds, look no further than Waldhaus. We loved the relaxing atmosphere, delicious cuisine and hotel setting. We hope to return some day, maybe over summer to explore the hotel in a warmer setting!

(KLM flies to Zurich airport, from where Waldhaus Flims is only 150 km away. Plan your trip here)
